Fam­ily goes into nul­lah to look for miss­ing son

Month after 32-year-old Ajay Ath­wal dis­ap­peared into a flooded open drain in Thane, his fam­ily re­fuses to give up hope of find­ing his body

A MONTH after 32-year-old Ajay Ath­wal dis­ap­peared down a nul­lah on Au­gust 29, his dev­as­tated fam­ily has not given up hope of find­ing his body. On Wed­nes­day, a few men from Ath­wal’s fam­ily went into the nul­lah and scoured the spot for his body. For six hours they searched from Ram­na­gar nul­lah to Ko­pri.

Das­rat Ath­wal, Ajay’s brother, said, “After we went into the nul­lah, the dis­as­ter man­age­ment cell and fire bri­gade of­fi­cials reached the spot and got into the drain with us for the search op­er­a­tion. Why did they not search for him on day one? But, we did not find Ajay’s body.” Days since Ajay Ath­wal went miss­ing A ROB­BER’S deaf-mute act, that saw him es­cape the po­lice danda for years, was ex­posed by the Gov­ern­ment Rail­way Po­lice (GRP) in Thane yes­ter­day. Dattu Ram­das Pawar, 31, from Diva, is a sea­soned rob­ber and tar­gets train com­muters while pos­ing as a pas­sen­ger.
