Welling­ton CC, Re­gal play­ers come to blows in club match

A SCUFFLE broke out be­tween play­ers of Re­gal Cricket Club and Welling­ton CC on Sun­day dur­ing the semi-fi­nal of Mum­bai Ju­nior Cricket Shield at Mum­bai Cricket As­so­ci­a­tion’s (MCA) Kan­di­vli ground. The MCA on Mon­day re­ceived a com­plaint from Welling­ton, al­leg­ing man­han­dling and as­sault from Re­gal play­ers.

The in­ci­dent took place in the sixth over of the sec­ond in­nings when a Welling­ton bowler had an ar­gu­ment with a Re­gal bats­man. Ac­cord­ing to the com­plaint, the Re­gal bats­man charged to­wards the Welling­ton bowler and then sig­naled to his en­tire team af­ter which they came onto the pitch with bats and as­saulted the bowler and other Welling­ton play­ers. Pho­to­graphs of the as­sault have also been sub­mit­ted to the MCA. The match was held up for over an hour due to the scuffle.

Welling­ton, in its com­plaint, have ac­cused the um­pires for turn­ing a blind eye when the mat­ter es­ca­lated. How­ever, the match did be­gin later with a re­vised tar­get and Re­gal emerged tri­umphant.

Welling­ton al­leged that Re­gal play­ers used foul lan­guage af­ter the win.

A com­plaint was lodged against Re­gal play­ers at Kan­di­vli po­lice sta­tion. MCA’s Joint Sec­re­tary Dr Un­mesh Khanvilkar said the dis­ci­plinary com­mit­tee will look into the is­sue.
