Sarita wins bronze in Poland

Former world cham­pion L Sarita Devi (60kg) signed off with a bronze medal at the 13th Sile­sian Open Box­ing Tour­na­ment for women in which In­dia’s ju­nior box­ers ruled the ring in Gli­wice, Poland.

Sarita, also a mul­ti­ple-time Asian cham­pion a former Asian Games bronze-medal­list, was joined by Lovlina Bor­go­hain (69kg) and Pooja Rani (81kg) in the list of those whose cam­paign came to an end in the semi-fi­nals on Fri­day. The cel­e­brated MC Mary Kom (48kg) and Man­isha (54kg) are the only ones to have made the fi­nals, sched­uled Satur­day night. CHRIS Fer­nan­des, 15, did a star turn by scor­ing the de­ci­sive goal to steer St. John the Evan­ge­list (And­heri) to a 1-0 win against Jamnabai In­ter­na­tional (Juhu) in a Mum­bai Schools Sports As­so­ci­a­tion-or­gan­ised boys’s U-16 Di­vi­sion-IV knock­out sec­ond round match at Azad Maidan on Satur­day. In a closely-con­tested en­counter, lanky striker Chris found the back of the net in the 18th minute to put the And­heri school in the lead, which they man­aged to hold on to till the end of the match.

In another sec­ond round match, So­ham Dhore’s dou­ble strikes helped Narayan ET (Borivli) get past Swami Vivekanand (Borivli) by a 2-1 mar­gin.

The S A Poon­awalla Mil­lion (Gr 3), the fea­ture event of Sun­day’s seven-race card, will see New Moon, trained by Neil Darashah, who will take on Pi­o­neer and Ex­cel­lent.
