Sarita wins bronze in Poland
Former world champion L Sarita Devi (60kg) signed off with a bronze medal at the 13th Silesian Open Boxing Tournament for women in which India’s junior boxers ruled the ring in Gliwice, Poland.
Sarita, also a multiple-time Asian champion a former Asian Games bronze-medallist, was joined by Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) and Pooja Rani (81kg) in the list of those whose campaign came to an end in the semi-finals on Friday. The celebrated MC Mary Kom (48kg) and Manisha (54kg) are the only ones to have made the finals, scheduled Saturday night. CHRIS Fernandes, 15, did a star turn by scoring the decisive goal to steer St. John the Evangelist (Andheri) to a 1-0 win against Jamnabai International (Juhu) in a Mumbai Schools Sports Association-organised boys’s U-16 Division-IV knockout second round match at Azad Maidan on Saturday. In a closely-contested encounter, lanky striker Chris found the back of the net in the 18th minute to put the Andheri school in the lead, which they managed to hold on to till the end of the match.
In another second round match, Soham Dhore’s double strikes helped Narayan ET (Borivli) get past Swami Vivekanand (Borivli) by a 2-1 margin.
The S A Poonawalla Million (Gr 3), the feature event of Sunday’s seven-race card, will see New Moon, trained by Neil Darashah, who will take on Pioneer and Excellent.
