Reservoir levels remain subpar
Even as Mumbai and some parts of the country are deluged by rain, a large number of reservoirs are yet to receive adequate amounts of water, which is crucial for winter crops. As of last week (24 August), total live storage at the 91 reservoirs tracked by the Central Water Commission stood at 79.925 billion cubic metres (bcm), which is 51% of the total live storage capacity of the reservoirs. At the same time last year, storage levels stood at 101.947 bcm. As the accompanying chart shows, barring reservoirs in the northern part of India, water levels are less than previous year’s levels in all regions.
