Your blood volume increases by 50 per cent when you’re pregnant, which can lead to low iron levels. This means you’ll run short of the red blood cells that carry oxygen around your body, leading to tiredness and the possibility of anaemia, so if you are feeling run-down, see your GP. It’s a good idea to boost your iron levels from the start. If you’re not keen on tablets, a liquid iron supplement is gentle on your stomach and easily absorbed.
