Ethopia’s Gar­ment In­dus­try Ex­pe­ri­enc­ing Growth

The Ethiopian tex­tile and gar­ment sec­tor is rapidly ex­pand­ing and play­ing a key role in boost­ing the coun­try’s light in­dus­try and in trans­form­ing the econ­omy, ac­cord­ing to the coun­try’s min­istry of in­dus­try. The num­ber of in­dus­tries in this sec­tor has more than dou­bled in the last few years to reach over 200, a top min­istry of­fi­cial said re­cently. Govern­ment sta­tis­tics show Ethiopia’s tex­tile and ap­parel in­dus­try has grown at an aver­age rate of 51% and more than 65 tex­tile in­vest­ment projects have been li­censed for for­eign in­vestors in the last five to six years. The coun­try now has a 15 year road-map to strate­gize cot­ton de­vel­op­ment by rais­ing pro­duc­tiv­ity and di­rect­ing how the sec­tor can be as­sisted and fa­cil­i­tated.
