The MNRE, in order to optimally utilise wind energy sites, through the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) proposes to offer an interest rate rebate for projects set up before 2000 to replace existing wind turbines with new ones. “Most wind-turbines installed up to 2000 are of capacity below 500 kW and are at sites having high wind energy potential. It is estimated that over 3,000 MW capacity installations are from wind turbines of 500 kW or below. To optimally use the wind energy resources repowering is required,” the draft policy for Repowering of Wind Power Projects stated.
