Dr Kamini Rao, unplugged!
Dr Kamini Rao – the woman who helped change the face of Indian reproductive medicine.
Dr Kamini A Rao, Medical Director of Milann and recipient of the Padma Shri, has a distinguished clinical and research career in reproductive medicine. Her creative energy, diversity and versatility are well recognized in the country’s medical and research community. She is best described as a blend of hard work, motivation, drive and ambition.
The inability to conceive is a source of concern for most couples, thus creating a requirement for dedicated service and expert guidance in the field of infertility. Dr Kamini Rao has been one of the pioneers in the field of assisted reproduction.
A pioneer of the SIFT ( Semen Intra Fallopian Transfer) technique in assisted reproduction, Dr Kamini achieved a major breakthrough with the birth of India’s first SIFT baby, a fact which has brought her much acclaim the world over. She has the distinction of having set up South India‘s first semen bank as well as having engineered South India’s first babies born through ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) and through laser assisted hatching. An academically oriented person, Dr Kamini has authored and published over 40 medical books and is an acclaimed educationist. She has been a recipient of the Karnataka State Rajyotsava Award, the Outstanding Woman Obstetrician & Gynaecologist Award and the International Federation of Obstetrics & Gynecology (FIGO) Award amongst others. She is committed passionately to bringing research into clinical medicine, and in particular to promoting the value of evidence based medicine. Her efforts are a wonderful example of how basic science and good clinical medicine can merge to give outstanding care.
