Dr Kamini Rao – the woman who helped change the face of In­dian re­pro­duc­tive medicine.

Dr Kamini A Rao, Med­i­cal Di­rec­tor of Mi­lann and re­cip­i­ent of the Padma Shri, has a dis­tin­guished clin­i­cal and re­search ca­reer in re­pro­duc­tive medicine. Her cre­ative en­ergy, di­ver­sity and ver­sa­til­ity are well rec­og­nized in the coun­try’s med­i­cal and re­search com­mu­nity. She is best de­scribed as a blend of hard work, mo­ti­va­tion, drive and am­bi­tion.

The in­abil­ity to con­ceive is a source of con­cern for most cou­ples, thus cre­at­ing a re­quire­ment for ded­i­cated ser­vice and ex­pert guid­ance in the field of in­fer­til­ity. Dr Kamini Rao has been one of the pioneers in the field of as­sisted reproduction.

A pi­o­neer of the SIFT ( Se­men In­tra Fal­lop­ian Trans­fer) tech­nique in as­sisted reproduction, Dr Kamini achieved a ma­jor break­through with the birth of In­dia’s first SIFT baby, a fact which has brought her much ac­claim the world over. She has the dis­tinc­tion of hav­ing set up South In­dia‘s first se­men bank as well as hav­ing en­gi­neered South In­dia’s first ba­bies born through ICSI (In­tra Cy­to­plas­mic Sperm In­jec­tion) and through laser as­sisted hatch­ing. An aca­dem­i­cally ori­ented per­son, Dr Kamini has au­thored and pub­lished over 40 med­i­cal books and is an ac­claimed ed­u­ca­tion­ist. She has been a re­cip­i­ent of the Kar­nataka State Ra­jy­ot­sava Award, the Out­stand­ing Woman Ob­ste­tri­cian & Gy­nae­col­o­gist Award and the In­ter­na­tional Fed­er­a­tion of Ob­stet­rics & Gyne­col­ogy (FIGO) Award amongst oth­ers. She is com­mit­ted pas­sion­ately to bring­ing re­search into clin­i­cal medicine, and in par­tic­u­lar to pro­mot­ing the value of ev­i­dence based medicine. Her ef­forts are a won­der­ful ex­am­ple of how ba­sic sci­ence and good clin­i­cal medicine can merge to give out­stand­ing care.
