Consumption in Asia with a new all-time high
Demographic trends and the strength of Asian economies keep pushing up Asia’s share of world footwear consumption: in 2016 this reached 54%, a new all-time high, quickly coming into line with its share of the world population. Europe and North America maintain footwear consumption at higher levels than their population would suggest, and although they remain very important footwear markets but, in terms of volume, each buys fewer shoes than China alone. China is the largest footwear market in the world with a stable consumption share slightly above 18%. Three other Asian countries, India, Indonesia and Japan, are also among the top 10 footwear consumers. The World Footwear Yearbook, a project developed since 2011, analyses the most important trends within the worldwide Footwear industry and offers a comprehensive picture of the footwear industry . In its most recent edition the publication presents statistics by 2016, both in quantity and value, giving a picture of the positioning of the main players taking into account production, consumption, exports and imports. The publication also includes an individual analysis of dozens of markets, as well as the evolution of the main world players in this sector, with 79 countries under analysis.
