In the event­ful sum­mer of 1969, when man took his first walk on the moon, Doris and Don Fisher opened the first Gap store in San Fran­cisco, Cal­i­for­nia, with the aim to cre­ate a store ex­pe­ri­ence that was easy for the cus­tomer and of­fered a wide se­lec­tion of fits and styles. Over the last 48 years, the com­pany has grown from a sin­gle store to a global fash­ion busi­ness with five clearly de­fined brands — Gap, Banana Repub­lic, Old Navy, Ath­leta and In­ter­mix. To­day, the brand’s clothes are avail­able glob­ally in 90 coun­tries, through 3,300 com­pany-op­er­ated stores, in al­most 400 fran­chise stores, and sev­eral e-com­merce sites. The com­pany em­ploys more than 135,000 peo­ple glob­ally and con­tin­ues to grow ex­po­nen­tially.
