The first edition of the Delhi International Leather Expo (DILEX) - Reverse Buyer Seller Meet (RBSM) was held from September 28-29, 2018 at The Leela Ambience Hotel & Residences, Gurugram, NCT of Delhi. In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Make In India’, RBSM was created as a platform for the Indian leather industry to showcase its competitive products and services. The show witnessed more than 50 buyers from about 20 plus countries from Europe, Africa, ASEAN, CIS, and MEA over the two days.

Speaking on the occasion, Mukhtarul Amin, Chairman - Council for Leather Exports said," We now have well established tanneries, large shoe factories, different leather clusters in places like Chennai and Kanpur, and state-of-the-art technical institutes providing well-trained work force. We are the second largest producer of footwear, and our industry is worth $18bn. In order to enhance design, we have contacted designers from several countries so that factories can get it touch with them to improve their design capacity. We have also been organising a designer-specific fair to ensure that the shortcoming is addressed. All these have been made possible because of the commitment our government has given to the industry."

Mention may be made that Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu launched a ` 2,600 crore special package for the leather and footwear industry. It is expected it will help generate around three lakh jobs. Prabhu launched it while inaugurating the 33rd edition of India International Leather Fair. The minister was quoted that the Centre is implementing a holistic strategy to “rejuvenate and reinvent” the country’s leather sector. The strategy, he said, backed by a ` 2,600 crore package, sought to touch on various key imperatives such as technology upgradation, human resource development and enhancing market access for the exporters.

CLE'S Vice-chairman Aqeel Ahmed thanked the government for its unwavering support.
