Toyo Ito’s Taichung Metropolitan Opera House has been completed, and will open for the public early this month. Spanning six stories and more than 6,24,300 sq.ft., the design from the Pritzker Prize–winning architect features three theaters as well as rehearsal rooms and a restaurant. The façade is adorned with a series of hourglass wells, filled with gridded glazing to frame city views from internal terraces. The cavernous interior features numerous stairwells, lobbies, and auditorium spaces. Receiving support from 58 curved wall units, the beam-and column-free structure houses a 2,014-seat grand theater, an 800-seat theater and a 200-seat blackbox theater. The theaters will host mostly local programming with some international attractions as well. Local music groups and students will also be accommodated.
