What’s common between a Portuguese football superstar, a South Indian actress and an Indian politician? A wink. Back in 2006, Ronaldo was playing his first World Cup. During Portugal’s match against England, Ronaldo incited his former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney into a red card. Then, facing the paparazzi, the Portuguese footballer knowingly winked. At the time, some English football fans feared that Ronaldo’s reputation in the country would be tarnished. The act created a lot of buzz. Twelve years on, the notorious wink refuses to evade our memory. More recently, Priya Prakash Varrier, an actress down south, broke records on social media. The reason being the wink again. A clip from her movie Oru Adaar Love, in which Priya is seen winking at a boy, caused the internet to have a meltdown. The social media buzz actually earned her the title of being the ‘national crush’. And the latest to join the winking club was Rahul Gandhi, whose wink during the Monsoon Session of Parliament made headlines. The President of the Congress Party hugged Prime Minister Narendra Modi after his speech on turning BJP’s hatred towards him into love. Taken aback by Pappu’s warm embrace at first, the PM called him again and shook his hand. Rahul was quick to follow this act up with a wink at his party colleagues. Needless to say, this wink has taken the cake in creating a stir on social media, what with the usual mix of lovers and haters busy commenting on this latest winking episode.
