IOC wins Mu­ru­gappa Gold Cup

In­dian Oil Cor­po­ra­tion (IOC) won the 92nd Mu­ru­gappa Gold Cup hockey tour­na­ment, thrash­ing In­dian Rail­ways 4­0 in the fi­nal at the Mayor Rad­hakr­ish­nan Hockey Sta­dium in Chen­nai on Septem­ber 16.

IOC, with 10 in­ter­na­tion­als in its side, came back from two goals down to beat the In­dian Army XI 4­3 in the semi­fi­nals. Rail­ways, which recorded com­pre­hen­sive vic­to­ries over the In­dian Army, Cen­tral Sec­re­tariat and the Mum­bai Hockey As­so­ci­a­tion in the early stages, routed Pun­jab and Sind Bank 4­0 in the other semi­fi­nal.

De­fend­ing cham­pion Oil and Nat­u­ral Gas Cor­po­ra­tion (ONGC) ex­ited from the group stage af­ter it lost to the In­dian Army XI 3­2 in its fi­nal group game.

In an in­ter­est­ing en­counter be­tween Rail­ways and ONGC, In­dian in­ter­na­tional Gur­jant Singh scored a hat­trick, in­clud­ing a last­minute goal that gave a 4­3 vic­tory to ONGC. The tour­na­ment also saw strong per­for­mances from young play­ers Sunny Ma­lik (In­dian Navy), Pardeep Singh (Rail­ways) and Shi­lanand Lakra (ONGC).
