IOC wins Murugappa Gold Cup
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) won the 92nd Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament, thrashing Indian Railways 40 in the final at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai on September 16.
IOC, with 10 internationals in its side, came back from two goals down to beat the Indian Army XI 43 in the semifinals. Railways, which recorded comprehensive victories over the Indian Army, Central Secretariat and the Mumbai Hockey Association in the early stages, routed Punjab and Sind Bank 40 in the other semifinal.
Defending champion Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) exited from the group stage after it lost to the Indian Army XI 32 in its final group game.
In an interesting encounter between Railways and ONGC, Indian international Gurjant Singh scored a hattrick, including a lastminute goal that gave a 43 victory to ONGC. The tournament also saw strong performances from young players Sunny Malik (Indian Navy), Pardeep Singh (Railways) and Shilanand Lakra (ONGC).
