UNIVER­SITY FOR DE­FENCE PUR­POSES

The Gov­ern­ment of In­dia has ac­corded ‘in­prin­ci­ple’ ap­proval for set­ting up of In­dian Na­tional De­fence Univer­sity (INDU) in the district of Gur­gaon in Haryana. The salient fea­tures of INDU are as under: INDU will be set up as a fully au­ton­o­mous in­sti­tu­tion to be con­sti­tuted by an Act of Par­lia­ment to develop and prop­a­gate higher ed­u­ca­tion in the field of De­fence Stud­ies, De­fence Man­age­ment, De­fence Sci­ence & Tech­nol­ogy and pro­mote pol­icy ori­ented re­search on all as­pects re­lat­ing to Na­tional Se­cu­rity and Strat­egy. The par­tic­i­pants in INDU shall be from armed forces, para­mil­i­tary forces, civil po­lice or­gan­i­sa­tions, in­tel­li­gence or­gan­i­sa­tions, bu­reau­cracy (civil, for­eign and al­lied ser­vices), diplo­mats, aca­demi­cians, uni­ver­si­ties stu­dents, doc­toral and post-doc­toral re­searchers and par­tic­i­pants from friendly for­eign coun­tries. The project will be im­ple­mented in three phases spread over a pe­riod of ten years at an es­ti­mated cost of 2,072 crore. INDU will be es­tab­lished af­ter pro­mul­ga­tion of INDU Act by the Par­lia­ment.
