Lt Gen­eral Sarath Chand took over as Vice Chief of Army Staff on Jan­uary 13, 2017. Be­fore tak­ing over as Vice Chief of Army Staff, the Gen­eral Of­fi­cer was com­mand­ing South Western Com­mand.

Lt Gen­eral Sarath Chand was com­mis­sioned into the Garhwal Ri­fles in June 1979. He is an alum­nus of Na­tional De­fence Academy, Khadak­wasla, Pune, and In­dian Mil­i­tary Academy, Dehradun. He is a grad­u­ate of the De­fence Ser­vices Staff Col­lege, Welling­ton (Nil­giris), the Higher Com­mand Course at Mhow, and the Na­tional De­fence Col­lege course at New Delhi. He com­manded his par­ent bat­tal­ion, 11 Garhwal Ri­fles, and an In­fantry Bri­gade in the desert sec­tor. He later suc­cess­fully com­manded Counter In­sur­gency Force, KILO in the Kash­mir Val­ley. He went on to com­mand the strate­gi­cally im­por­tant Ga­jraj Corps, in the East­ern theatre.

He has held a num­ber of im­por­tant staff as well as in­struc­tional ap­point­ments dur­ing his ca­reer in­clud­ing Colonel Gen­eral Staff of a Di­vi­sion and Bri­gadier Gen­eral Staff of a Corps, both in High Al­ti­tude Area along the North­ern Bor­ders and in the Mil­i­tary Sec­re­tary’s Branch at Army Head­quar­ters. His aca­demic qual­i­fi­ca­tions in­clude M.Sc (De­fence Stud­ies), M.Phil in De­fence & Man­age­ment Stud­ies and an M.Phil in De­fence & Strate­gic Stud­ies. He has served in the UN Mis­sion in So­ma­lia (UNOSOM-II). He is re­cip­i­ent of UYSM, AVSM, VSM awards and Chief of Army Staff ’s Com­men­da­tion Card on three oc­ca­sions.
