SIMI de­clared un­law­ful


The Spe­cial Tri­bunal has con­firmed the Min­istry of Home Af­fairs (MHA) dec­la­ra­tion of SIMI (Students Is­lamic Move­ment of In­dia) as an un­law­ful as­so­ci­a­tion. The Tri­bunal pro­nounced its or­der on Au­gust 1, 2012. SIMI was for the first time de­clared an un­law­ful as­so­ci­a­tion on Septem­ber 27, 2001.

The MHA, vide No­ti­fi­ca­tion dated Fe­bru­ary 3, 2012, had de­clared SIMI an un­law­ful as­so­ci­a­tion with im­me­di­ate ef­fect for two years, un­der the pro­vi­sions of the Un­law­ful Ac­tiv­i­ties (Preven­tion) Act, 1967. As per pro­vi­sion of the said Act, a tri­bunal con­sist­ing of Jus­tice V.K.Shali, a sit­ting Judge of Delhi High Court was con­sti­tuted to ad­ju­di­cate whether there is suf­fi­cient cause for declar­ing the as­so­ci­a­tion un­law­ful.
