The film marked Karan Johar’s directorial debut, and he did best what he came to be known for, portraying the complexities of relationships in their simplest form. And since then, people have believed in the saying – pyaar dosti hain. The film revolved around two best friends – Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Anjali (Kajol). Kajol dons two distinct avatars in the film. First, that of a not-so-fashionable tomboy with cropped hair, and the one who could beat the boys in basketball. Rahul falls in lovlove with Tina, played by Rani Mukherji, and Anjali movesmove out and is left heartbroken. In the second half, the film ttakes you through time travel of eight years. Rani unfortunately,unfor dies during child birth and leaves back lettersletter for her daughter to read. Eight years later, when RahulRah and Anjali meet again, sparks fly instantly. Kajol, in the second half of the film surprisingly becomes the hurt-hin-love saree clad, svelte young long-haired lover girl. What follows is a predictable love incidence between Rahul and Anjali, Rahul finally winning her hand in marriage. In both the avatars that Kajol donned, she was the character completely. TheT tomboy-look with cropped hair and colourful bandsban became a trend amongst the young girls and she totallyto stole the show with her oh-so-girly saree clad IndianIndia nari look in the second.
