End Of An Era
Bollywood’s first female icon, met with an untimely death in Dubai. Stardust pays a tribute to this beautiful superstar.
At the age of 4, she stepped into the film industry. At the age of 54, she left a giant void with her untimely death. She was indeed the queen of hearts – an actor par excellence with an amazing comic timing and a nimble footed dancer, Sridevi was the film industry’s first woman superstar. She started out in Tamil movies and from there on worked in many regional films, and then moved to Hindi films. Dubbed as “thunder-thighs” from right in the beginning of her career, Sridevi started her tryst with Bollywood with Solwa Sawan in 1979. But it was later in 1983, that her jodi with the jumpin’ Jack of Bollywood, Jeetendra got her into the fast paced paisa vasool league of masala films like Himmatwalla, Tohfa etc. Her popularity knew no bounds and she was heralded as the queen of the masses. But this powerhouse performer upped her game still further as she went on to magically dazzle in films like Mr India, Chaalbaaz, Nagin, Lamhe, Chaalbaaz and so many others. She was on top of the Tinselville ladder and was the only female actor earning as much as the other male superstars, and this earned her the title of Bollywood’s first and biggest female superstar. Marriage to producer Boney Kapoor took her away from the arc lights for 15 years where she concentrated on being a good wife and mother of two daughter Jahnvi and Khushi. But at the age of 49, she braved the errant ways of stardom by making a comeback with Gouri Shinde’s English Vinglish. Her charming portrayal of a woman piecing her life back again took the nation by storm. Indeed, the superstar remained the nation’s darling despite the hiatus. Her next film Mom too was a huge hit and it showed that Sridevi had not lost her Midas touch. In the recent months, the perfectionist that she was, Sridevi was gearing up for her daughter Jahnvi’s debut in Dhadak. One saw her standing by her daughter at several top- of-the-line events looking as gorgeous as ever. In fact, she attended so many of our Stardust Awards and other Magna Publishing events year after year and was as gracious and dignified with all of us when we met her. However, her last tryst with the world was in Dubai where she looked amazingly ethereal at her nephew Mohit Marwah’s wedding. Unfortunately, she died in her hotel room at the wee hours of the morning on Sunday, February 25, 2018 Indian time. According to the Dubai forensic department, her death was caused by accidental drowning. It is still a mystery as to how she drowned in a bathtub. Boney Kapoor is totally devastated and incoherent. And as we go to the press, we are still awaiting the final results. Indeed, death has robbed us of this beautiful superstar who reigned in the hearts of the people. This beautiful icon’s untimely death is indeed a great loss for the film industry… And a great loss for India! …Sridevi, you were destiny’s fave child… gone too soon. Indeed, Stardust will sorely miss you!
