Post Titli: Naidu writes to PM for in­terim relief of `1,200 cr

PUTTING the loss aris­ing out of the Titli cy­clone at `2,800 crore, AP Chief Min­is­ter N Chandrababu Naidu on Satur­day dashed off a let­ter to Prime Min­is­ter Naren­dra Modi to re­lease an in­terim relief of `1,200 crore im­me­di­ately to take up relief and re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion mea­sures to min­imise the mis­ery of the peo­ple.

Naidu, in his let­ter, said the se­vere cy­clonic storm Titli has hit Srikaku­lam and Viziana­garam dis­tricts in the early hours of Oct 11 with a wind speed gust­ing up to 165 km, cou­pled with high ve­loc­ity winds and heavy rain­fall rang­ing from 10-43 cm in dif­fer­ent parts of the dis­tricts.

The cy­clone Titli has dev­as­tated these dis­tricts and left huge dam­ages to prop­er­ties, agri­cul­ture and hor­ti­cul­ture crops, houses and in­fra­struc­ture re­sult- ing in deep dis­tress and mis­ery to the peo­ple of these dis­tricts. “The cost of the dam­aged prop­er­ties, in­fra­struc­ture and other re­lated sec­tor have been ten­ta­tively worked out to be around `2,800 crore,’’ Naidu said.

Naidu, who had been camp­ing in Srikaku­lam since Oct 11 night, re­quested the Cen­tre to lib­er­ally and ex­pe­di­tiously sanc­tion the relief so as to min­imise the mis­ery of the peo­ple and sought relief of an in­terim relief of `1,200 crore at the ear­li­est.

The state govern­ment es­ti­mated that the cy­clone caused loss of `1,000 crore to hor­ti­cul­ture crops, `800 crore loss to agri­cul­ture sec­tor, `500 crore to elec­tric­ity sec­tor, `100 crore to R&B depart­ment, `100 crore to pan­chayat raj depart­ment and `50 crore each loss to an­i­mal hus­bandry and fish­eries depart­ment and `100 crore each loss to RWS and ir­ri­ga­tion sec­tors.
