SAMSUNG GALAXY A8+ (2018)
The 2018 iteration of A8+ sees Samsung making some major changes to make its presence known in the premium mid-end segment. For starters it uses a 6-inch Infinity Display similar to the one found in last year’s Galaxy S8 and
S8+ but misses out on the curved screen edges. The taller
18.5:9 aspect ratio accounts for the navigation bar especially helpful during portrait mode and while watching videos. The reduction in bezels has the effect of moving the fingerprint reader to the back just under the 16MP camera with f/1.7 aperture. In fact, it is the first Samsung device to ship with dual front cameras comprising of a 16MP+8MP setup with
f/1.9 aperture. Video recording is bolstered with Video Digital image stabilisation (VDis) technology and selfies with Live Focus which blurs the background and adds bokeh. Low light photography benefits from the larger 1.12um pixel and 1/2.8” sensor capturing more light. Always On display is present along with support for Samsung Pay and Gear. While it has been constructed using a mix of glass and hybrid, it has an impressive IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. Samsung’s proprietary Exynos 7885 SoC handles processing duties along with Mali-G71 GPU and 6GB RAM. For storage 64GB is built-in, which can be expanded upto 256GB via microSD. Ticking off the virtual assistant checkbox is of course Bixby to help with setting reminders and more. With a thickness of 8.3mm and 191 grams weight, we just wish it was lighter and slimmer.
