Cech is a fighter, says James

- ARUN GEORGE

One of the surprises of the transfer deadline day was Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech deciding to stay with the club and fight for his place that has been taken over by Belgian Thibaut Courtois since the start of the Premier League season.

But the unlikely decision has not surprised former Portsmouth and England no. 1 David James, now the playermanager of Kerala Blasters FC in the upcoming Indian Super League.

Cech had tweeted after the transfer window closed: “Blue is the colour! It hasn’t changed”.

But David saw that one coming. “Am I surprised? No. Chelsea are a super club challenging for the league this season,” he said.

David holds the record for most clean sheets in the Premier League ( 173), which he managed from an astounding 573 appearances. At just 32, Cech is the favourite to break the record and he is just 12 shy of the mark but has found himself in a spot since the arrival Courtois from Atletico Madrid.

“I think Courtouis is a wonderful goalkeeper but he ( Cech) would love to get back in the side. He could have moved to Spain or somewhere else, but he likes to stay and fight,” said James.
