Pash­tun- ma­jor­ity tribal ar­eas, lo­cated along its bor­der with Afghanistan, are known as Fed­er­ally Ad­min­is­tered Tribal Ar­eas ( Fata). Th­ese ar­eas en­joy a semi- au­tonomous sta­tus and are partly con­trolled by Islamabad Pak­istan gov­erns re­gion through 1901 Bri­tish reg­u­la­tions They have long been as­so­ci­ated with Is­lamist in­sur­gency, with many mil­i­tant out­fits based there. US in­va­sion of Afghanistan in 2001 forced mil­i­tants to flee to Fata where they have held sanc­tu­ar­ies
