Po­lice­man shoots self dead in Kolkata

Kolkata: A po­lice­man al­legedly shot him­self dead us­ing his ser­vice ri­fle at the iconic Writ­ers’ Build­ing here on Fri­day af­ter­noon, of­fi­cials said. The in­ci­dent hap­pened around 3.25 pm at the Bri­tish-era build­ing, which was the state sec­re­tariat be­fore chief min­is­ter Ma­mata Ban­er­jee moved to the 14-floor Na­banna on the other bank of the Hooghly river in 2013. The con­sta­ble, iden­ti­fied as 34-year-old Bish­wa­jit Karak of the police’s 5th bat­tal­ion, was on med­i­ca­tion for de­pres­sion, of­fi­cials said. Karak was posted at gate num­ber 6, which is at present used by VVIPs, in­clud­ing some se­nior min­is­ters to en­ter the build­ing, they said.
