MSRTC adopts Adhaar link smart cards for concessional passes
The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has decided to issue Aadhaar linked smart cards to all concession availing sections in the state. State transport minister Diwakar Raote announced.
The move aims to bring transparency and avoid misuse. The state public transport utility offers concessional transport passes to various section of society. According to the MSRTC, it provides concessional passes to as many as 24 sections of society ranging from students, senior citizens to disabled people.
The state transport body, however, received hundreds of complaints regarding bogus passes and that some had obtained the pass by providing fake information. This in turn, incurs losses to the state transport body. Even some cases of fake passes were lodged at police stations. As per the MSRTC’s claims, many conductors were manhandled by pass holder passengers over suspicious passes. To overcome from this issue, MSRTC has decided to issue new Aadhaar-linked smart cards.
The MSRTC’s central office in Mumbai said that the transport body gives concessions from 50% to 100% on travel to 24 sections of society. Now, the state transport has decided to link new smart cards with the Aadhaar card. It will provide accurate information of particular person.
The smart card for will allow students and monthly and tri-monthly pass holders to pay an amount of their passes online using smart cards. These people need not travel to bus stand to renew passes. The smart card system will curb misuse. In the last financial year, around 39 crore people took benefit of the concessional passes.
A senior official in the MSRTC’s Kolhapur division, said, “We received an application for short-term passes. There were many incidents reported on fake or tampered concessional passes. The smart card will curb misuse.”
