BJP Plans Big Around East UP ‘Gains’

The BJP’s ex­pected good show in eastern UP, Pur­van­chal, tra­di­tion­ally the strong­hold of the BSP and SP, will help the party bol­ster its bid for power in the next Assem­bly elec­tions. Most exit polls on Mon­day in­di­cated big gains for the BJP in the re­gion, giv­ing it 10 of the 18 seats. The party, how­ever, ex­pects to cor­ner be­tween 11 and 13 seats, ac­cord­ing to BJP’s state pres­i­dent Laxmikant Ba­j­pai.

The BJP is par­tic­u­larly weak i n A z a mg a r h , J a u n p u r a n d Ghazipur. Be­sides, the party has just one MP and five MLAs from this re­gion, Ba­j­pai said.

I n a ntic­i­pa­tion of favourable re­sults, the party is draw­ing up plans to bui ld pres­sure on t he state govern­ment and even push for mid-term pol ls to be able to come back to power in the state. On ac­tiv­i­ties he was re­fer­ring to, Ba­j­pai said ag­i­ta­tions against the state govern­ment would be in­ten­si­fied by tak­ing up lo­cal is­sues and the mes­sage that a BJP govern­ment in the state can get more benef its from an NDA-led cen­tral govern­ment will be pushed among peo­ple.
