BJP Plans Big Around East UP ‘Gains’
The BJP’s expected good show in eastern UP, Purvanchal, traditionally the stronghold of the BSP and SP, will help the party bolster its bid for power in the next Assembly elections. Most exit polls on Monday indicated big gains for the BJP in the region, giving it 10 of the 18 seats. The party, however, expects to corner between 11 and 13 seats, according to BJP’s state president Laxmikant Bajpai.
The BJP is particularly weak i n A z a mg a r h , J a u n p u r a n d Ghazipur. Besides, the party has just one MP and five MLAs from this region, Bajpai said.
I n a nticipation of favourable results, the party is drawing up plans to bui ld pressure on t he state government and even push for mid-term pol ls to be able to come back to power in the state. On activities he was referring to, Bajpai said agitations against the state government would be intensified by taking up local issues and the message that a BJP government in the state can get more benef its from an NDA-led central government will be pushed among people.
