The Economic Times - - News Of The Day -

The Supreme Court on Friday banned activity in 26 of 56 operational mines in Odisha, sparing the iron ore and manganeserich state the wider ban it had imposed on Karnataka and Goa to check illegal mining. The order impacts mines whose leas- es, pending second and subsequent renewals, were running under a “deemed” extension. A bench comprising Justices AK Patnaik, SS Nijjar and FMI Kalifullah said a deemed extension can be granted only for a onetime period of 20 years and that subsequent extensions are illegal. The affected parties will now have to apply for a fresh lease, the court said. The state has also been directed to clear the cases of captive mines first. -
