Wa­ter Pol­lu­tion Worry for Rio Olympic Games

Sail­ing’s gov­ern­ing body may con­duct an in­de­pen­dent wa­ter-qual­ity tests in Rio de Janeiro’s pol­luted Gua­n­abara Bay, the sail­ing venue for the 2016 Olympics. In a let­ter to sports min­is­ter Aldo Re­belo, Rio’s en­vi­ron­ment sec­re­tary ac­knowl­edged the best that could be done was a re­duc­tion of “over 50%”—well be­low the promised 80%.
