Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh’s statement to ET inviting former Congress leaders like Sharad Pawar and Mamata Banerjee to rejoin the Congress, has found traction among some Congress leaders who have been smarting from the setback in the Lok Sabha elections. Congress leaders in Maharashtrasaidthepartyleadership should immediately invite Nationalist Congress Party Pawar back to the Congress. The clamour to get Pawar comes as the Congress and the NCP has been nearly wiped out from the Maharashtra political map in the Lok Sabha polls. While the Congress got 2 seats, down from its tally of 17, the NCP got four seats, down from 8 seats. A Congress leader said that if the current situation prevails then both the NCP and the Congress would find it hard to come back to power in the assembly polls that are to be held in October this year. “We should get Sharad Pawar into the party and give him a free hand, let him decide who the CM should be, Ajit Pawar or anyone else, only then we would be able to come to power,” said a Congress leader. The recent polls show that the Shiv Sena-BJP has taken lead in more than 230 assembly segments out of the total 288.
