Modi, Good Neighbour

The Economic Times - - The Edit Page - A SESHAN

It is childish on the part of those who have objected to Modi’s invitation to the Sri Lankan President to attend the former’s swearing-in ceremony. It is the equivalent of one not inviting a neighbor to a wedding in the family. In fact, the occasion should be utilised to improve relations. If India wanted to be tough with Sri Lanka it could have deployed naval boats to accompany fishermen to protect them. Modi is statesmanlike in inviting the heads of not only SL but also Pakistan and Bangladesh, among others, in the interests of laying a firm foundation for good neighbourly relations.
