Modi to Club Depts: Gujarat Officials
It’s not ‘defeat’ that worries Congress, but the question mark over the ability of Nehru-Gandhi family to lead
In the first official confirmation of reports that PM-designate Narendra Modi is working on conflating related ministries, Gujarat government officials said he is making a “good beginning” by assembling these departments into “organic ministries”. ET had reported in its May 21 edition that Modi may combine related departments to form super ministries In a press statement issued by Gujarat Bhawan, officials claimed Modi has made a dent in formation of ministries by following his professed principle of minimum government and maximum governance. This would rationalise governance and alter the work culture, the statement said. “It is a good beginning in transforming entity of assembled ministries to Organic Ministries. It will bring more coordination between different departments,” Nilesh Shukla, a Gujarat government official said. Confirming the clubbing of ministries, the statement said, “the focus is on convergence in the activities of various ministries where one Cabinet minister will be heading a cluster of ministries who are working in complimentary sectors.” Officials claimed that through this Modi is aiming at smart governance where the top layers of dispensation will be downsized and there would be expansion at the grass root level. He has reportedly spent the last four of his stay in the capital on finalising this blueprint. The move is aimed at ending the “political instability and multi-party governments” that existed earlier.
