Modi vir­tu­ally trumped these skep­tics by invit­ing Saarc lead­ers to his swear­ing-in. Un­til now, Saarc has largely re­mained a con­cept with no real progress to make this group­ing a strong re­al­ity. In­dia be­ing the largest player in the group must take this idea for­ward.

It is re­ally a mas­ter­stroke from Modi to get In­dia’s neigh­bours to at­tend cul­mi­na­tion of the world’s big­gest demo­cratic ex­er­cise. This is a land­mark be­gin­ning and sym­bolic too. But the big­ger mes­sage from this is that we value our im­me­di­ate neigh­bours and our vi­brant di­as­pora. Af­ter all, the In­dian Ocean is­land state of Mau­ri­tius, which is home to ma­jor­ity of PIOs, was rep­re­sented by Prime
