The absence of Parliamentary numbers meant a striking opposition could cripple the UPA-II in the Lok Sabha. That’s what happened for long stretches in the second half of UPA-II’s tenure, giving it an extremely poor Parliamentary record. The NDA has the numbers in the Lok Sabha, and it will be looking to pass legislations, pending and new. It does not have the numbers in the Rajya Sabha, but it can work around that through deft f loor management and incremental gains. But if the BJP reads its strong mandate to move ahead on some of the more polarising items on its agenda, it might have to deal with less pliable political opponents and maybe even a public backlash.
