Me­hbooba to Take Oath on Mon­day

Se­nior BJP lead­ers likely to at­tend the low-key cer­e­mony at Raj Bhawan in Jammu

Sri­na­gar: Peo­ples Demo­cratic Party pres­i­dent Me­hbooba Mufti would be sworn in as the first woman chief min­is­ter of Jammu and Kash­mir on April 4. Se­nior BJP lead­ers from New Delhi are ex­pected to at­tend the lowkey cer­e­mony at Raj Bhawan in the state’s win­ter cap­i­tal Jammu. There may be mi­nor changes in the Cab­i­net and port­fo­lios from the BJP side while Mufti’s PDP team will re­main more or less un­changed. “There could be changes from our side. Num­ber of berths in the Cab­i­net can in­crease as well,” a se­nior BJP leader told ET. The BJP was de­mand­ing two more min­is­te­rial berths in the Cab­i­net to equalise the share as both the par­ties have 28 MLAs in the Assem­bly. The BJP is fi­nal­is­ing the list of in­vi­tees sub­ject to avail­abil­ity and con­fir­ma­tion of se­nior lead­ers busy with the As­sam elec­tions. “Who can Me­hboobaji drop right now? I don’t think there would be any big change,” a se­nior PDP leader told ET. As of now11Cabi­net min­is­ters of the PDP, in­clud­ing CM, eight Cab­i­net min­is­ters of the BJP and three min­is­ters of state each from both par­ties would be sworn in on Mon­day.

Ac­cord­ing to sources, the oath-tak­ing cer­e­mony would be fol­lowed by a brief assem­bly ses­sion be­fore the cap­i­tal would shift to Sri­na­gar on May 1.
