Assailants Pumped 24 Bullets Into Tanzil’s Body
New Delhi: Mohd Tanzil Ahmad’s last official assignment was to accompany a member of the Pakistan JIT to a hotel where the other members of the team were staying. The JIT was on a five-day visit to India in connection with its probe into the January 2 Pathankot airbase attack. On Friday, the JIT returned to Pakistan and Tanzil after dropping his guest came back to South Delhi home from where he and his family left for Bijnor to attend a marriage ceremony on April 2.
Tanzil and his wife were allegedly attackedbytwounidentifiedmotorcycle-borne assailants who pumped as many as 24 bullets into his body. NIA saidthoughTanzilwasnotassociated with the probe into the Pathankot attack, he was deputed during the visit of JIT due to paucity of men. An assistantcommandantfromBSF,Tanzil joined NIA in 2009 on deputation and had handled many high-profile terror investigations, including cases related to the Islamic State and fake currency. TheNIAinJanuary this year had arrested over a dozen suspects for trying to join ISIS. Tanzil was responsible for nationwide crackdown on the IS module. He was also instrumental in the arrest of Haider Ali, head of IM-Simi module. The module was responsible for Bodhgaya serial blasts.
The group headed by Haider later planted bombs during the Patna rally of then BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi. Tanzil is survived by two childrenandwifewhoalsosufferedbullet injuries and is reported to be critical. NIA termed the killing a “planned attack” and did not rule out the possibility of a terror angle behind the shootout. NIA official said Tanzil has been associated with probe related to IM operatives and has appeared on many court dates. He has also been associated with 2014 Burdwan blasts case, the official added.
NIA in a statement said: “Tanzil Ahmed was an asset to the agency. His killing is a great loss to NIA. We take it as a challenge to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice. We will not rest until that happens.”
DG of UP police, Javed Ahmad, told ET: “It is too early to comment on the motive behind killing. The attackers had covered their face. There are as many as 14 entry wounds and seven exit wounds on the body of Tanzil.”
