Fat Salaries New Race for MLAs

The Economic Times - - The Edit Page -

The phenomenal rise in salaries and perquisites of MLAs was started by the AAP in Delhi, which hat is being passed around the country with Telangana announcing a massive hike in its MLA remuneration. Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are likely to follow suit. Bihar the other day entitled MLAs to microwave ovens and other consumer durables. There are also rumblings among the MPs claiming more pay than the MLAs. However, considering the basic premise, the remuneration of our legislators is already very high and nowhere in line with the work that these people do.

It is disconcerting to see legislators seeking salary hikes when farmers around the country, particularly in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka, have been reeling under drought. Our legislators should instead be ensuring potable water across the country. Just like we have a right to education, we need a right to water.
