Revive Parallel LPG Marketing
Apropos the Edit ‘Get Private Cooking Gas Marketers In’ (Apr 2), this is the right time to bring back LPG parallel marketing with the DBT in force. The scheme, introduced in the 1990s, withered away owing to widening subsidy. Investments by the private sector worth .₹ 3,000 crore of that era were rendered NPAs. MNC Caltex alone wrote off $35 million.
The greatest beneficiary of the reintroduction of parallel marketing and its integration with the DBT will be the government itself. The competition and efficiency will bring down the market price drastically, reducing the subsidy burden. This sector has the potential for the largest number of dealership startups, as witnessed in the 1990s. Employment opportunities for the skilled and unskilled will grow, apart from investments. The sooner this is done, the better it’ll be for the economy.
