Mum­bai: Vi­jay Mallya’s re­cent de­par­ture from United Spir­its was sparked by ac­tions ini­ti­ated by the com­pany’s in­de­pen­dent direc­tors Given the lat­ter-day em­pha­sis on their role as cor­po­rate gover­nance watch­dogs, ET asked New Delhi-based re­searcher Prime Data­base to take a look at who are the highest-paid in­de­pen­dent direc­tors at In­dian com­pa­nies by crunch­ing the num­bers dis­closed in an­nual re­ports.

In terms of re­mu­ner­a­tion from a sin­gle com­pany, the top ranker was Bernar­dus Jo­hannes Maria Ver­waayen, bet­ter known as Ben Ver­waayen, CEO of Al­ca­tel-Lu­cent be­tween 2008 and 2013. He got .₹ 2.5 crore in the year ended March 2015 for serv­ing on the board of Bharti Air­tel. The 63-year-old Dutch na­tional is co-founder of Keen Ven­ture Part­ners, which backs en­trepreneurs and their ideas.
