Mumbai: Vijay Mallya’s recent departure from United Spirits was sparked by actions initiated by the company’s independent directors Given the latter-day emphasis on their role as corporate governance watchdogs, ET asked New Delhi-based researcher Prime Database to take a look at who are the highest-paid independent directors at Indian companies by crunching the numbers disclosed in annual reports.
In terms of remuneration from a single company, the top ranker was Bernardus Johannes Maria Verwaayen, better known as Ben Verwaayen, CEO of Alcatel-Lucent between 2008 and 2013. He got .₹ 2.5 crore in the year ended March 2015 for serving on the board of Bharti Airtel. The 63-year-old Dutch national is co-founder of Keen Venture Partners, which backs entrepreneurs and their ideas.
