Me­hbooba Sworn in as CM of J&K

Jammu: Peo­ples Demo­cratic Party pres­i­dent Me­hbooba Mufti was sworn in as the first woman chief min­is­ter of Jammu & Kash­mir, re­launch­ing the PDP-BJP al­liance, af­ter a gap of the 87-day gover­nor rule in the state. PM Naren­dra Modi and BJP pres­i­dent Amit Shah con­grat­u­lated Mufti on mi­croblog­ging site Twit­ter. “May new gov­ern­ment of J&K leave no stone un­tenured in ful­fill­ing dreams and as­pi­ra­tions of peo­ple and take the state to new heights of progress,” Modi tweeted.

Mufti, 56, a law grad­u­ate from Kash­mir Univer­sity suc­ceeded her fa­ther Mufti Muham­mad Say­eed, who died on Jan­uary 7 this year in of­fice as the ninth chief min­is­ter of J&K. As many as 23 min­is­ters of the BJP and the PDP took oath along with Me­hbooba, in­clud­ing Nir­mal Singh, who will be the Deputy Chief Min­is­ter of the state. Two min­is­te­rial berths com­pared to the last BJPPDP Cab­i­net com­po­si­tion were kept va­cant. The min­is­ters took oath in five dif­fer­ent lan­guages. The low-key swear­ing-in cer­e­mony was at­tended mostly by the PDP and BJP MLAs and their rel­a­tives while the Congress boy­cotted the func­tion and in­de­pen­dent MLAs stayed away as well. From New Delhi, se­nior Cab­i­net min­is­ters Venka­iah Naidu, Har­sim­rat Kaur Badal and Ji­ten­dra Singh at­tended the cer­e­monyy.
