Mehbooba Sworn in as CM of J&K
Jammu: Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti was sworn in as the first woman chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir, relaunching the PDP-BJP alliance, after a gap of the 87-day governor rule in the state. PM Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah congratulated Mufti on microblogging site Twitter. “May new government of J&K leave no stone untenured in fulfilling dreams and aspirations of people and take the state to new heights of progress,” Modi tweeted.
Mufti, 56, a law graduate from Kashmir University succeeded her father Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, who died on January 7 this year in office as the ninth chief minister of J&K. As many as 23 ministers of the BJP and the PDP took oath along with Mehbooba, including Nirmal Singh, who will be the Deputy Chief Minister of the state. Two ministerial berths compared to the last BJPPDP Cabinet composition were kept vacant. The ministers took oath in five different languages. The low-key swearing-in ceremony was attended mostly by the PDP and BJP MLAs and their relatives while the Congress boycotted the function and independent MLAs stayed away as well. From New Delhi, senior Cabinet ministers Venkaiah Naidu, Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Jitendra Singh attended the ceremonyy.
