CM’s Task to Buy Political Time For Safe Landing
Mehbooba has to establish herself as 1st woman CM of Muslim-majority state
with a touch of pragmatism.
At the same time, she will have to wrest from the Modi government manoeuvering space to indulge in ‘politics of healing touch’ to check the pro-Pakistan separatists’ and manage the turf-war with the National Conference-Congress, even while trying to deal with the increasing rift in her party over ideological issues and power-sharing. After all, it is strategically important for the BJP too to show it is part of the ruling establishment in a Muslim-majority state.
Her immediate challenges will be the Lok Sabha by-poll when she vacates her seat in the Valley and facing the social challenges in establishing herself as the first woman CM of a Muslim-majority state. Many old associates of Mufti Sayed say that during difficult times he used to reassure them by saying, “time can be a healing factor” and that he believed that instruments of power and office can be imaginatively used for providing the ‘healing touch.’ With the benefit of daily guidance from her mentor lost, the question Mehbooba Mufti faces is whether she would prefer to trust time’s healing capacity and use the remainder of her tenure to establish a new profile and administrative agenda for herself to go to the people or whether she will use time at her disposal for a political safe landing from a difficult alliance.
