Raising Beef Ban and Article 35(A) Trivial Pursuit: BJP’s J&K Minister

“Why should we teach meaningless things to our children? We should concentrate on building schools, roads and provide clean drinking water to people.”

PDP rule, the three issues had soured the relationship between the coalition partners. It also saw a mob killing a man in Udhampur over false accusations of consuming beef. “These (beef ban, Article 35(A) and hoisting of flag) are trivial issues. They have no value. If you ask me, our work should define us,” Singh told ET at his office in Jammu. He said these issues should not be raised. Those who raised the issues had “nothing else to do.”

Leaders of the BJP had last year approached the state high court, seeking strict implementation of the beef ban law, challenging Article 35(A) and demanded that the state flag be not hoisted along with the Tricolour. The issues ultimately led to the delay in the BJP-PDP alliance taking office under Mehbooba Mufti, who sought reassurances from BJP to not rake up the issues after she was sworn in as chief minister.
