Pact Not in Our Interest

The Economic Times - - The Edit Page -

The India-US defence pact, when inked, is going to be more advantageous to the US than India. It would allow American aircraft and warships access to Indian military bases. The argument that it is a reciprocal arrangement does not hold water, as the question of stationing Indian troops on American soil does not arise. No amount of rationalisation will alter the fact that the move impinges on India’s strategic autonomy. No doubt, India cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the dynamics of geopolitical changes. But efforts that do not entail compromising India’s sovereignty have to be tried to tackle the challenges like China’s military expansionism without jettisoning its policy of non-alignment.
