Ad­ver­tis­ing It, is Ad­dress­ing It

In ‘Free­dom of Ex­pres­sion Inc’ (April 19), Pra­soon Joshi writes how in­dus­tries such as ad­ver­tis­ing are de­picted as places where gen­der equal­ity norms are flouted with pride. This, as Joshi says, may not re­flect re­al­ity, but then, gen­der equal­ity is reg­u­larly flouted in al­most all other in­dus­tries where no such ex­treme de­pic­tions are made. At least by de­pict­ing th­ese cliches, the ad­ver­tis­ing in­dus­try gets to deal with the dis­par­ity that other pro­fes­sions don't.
