Wanted: So­cial Me­dia Um­pire

In ‘Fill So­cial Me­dia with Lies’ (April 20), TK Arun sug­gests that the best way to fight mis­in­for­ma­tion and ca­nards is with mis­in­for­ma­tion and ca­nards. This pre-judges whose mis­in­for­ma­tion one thinks is more dan­ger­ous. Keep­ing that one man’s pro­pa­ganda is an­other man’s lie, it would be also worth­while to have a plat­form – ideally branded and trust­wor­thy – which can act as a kind of pop­u­lar, de­pend­able and in­de­pen­dent so­cial me­dia um­pire. This is, of course, eas­ier to con­sider than to get. But it may be worth some bright spark’s shot: a de­pend­able, main­stream me­dia or­gan­i­sa­tion that de­cides whether in­for­ma­tion is ‘out’ or ‘not out’.
