Cliché-Busting as Stereotype

The Economic Times - - The Edit Page -

Sudeshna Sen trains her guns on British Conservative Party member and aspirant London mayor Zac Goldsmith for targeting South Asians in a crass and divisive manner (‘How (Not) to Woo Desis’, April 20). It's interesting though how such stereotyping may actually be as much a product of deficient knowledge about demographic profiles as it is about how South Asians insist on cubbyholing themselves into exaggerated identity kits. If British nonSikhs indeed receive fliers about how the Golden Temple should remain in Sikh hands, they may jolly well have an opinion on the matter. Sen certainly seems to.
