New Delhi: The Election Commission has extended its deadline for receiving replies from 21 MLAs of the Aam Aadmi Party who hold posts of parliamentary secretaries in the Delhi government. The posts have not been exempted as offices of profit, as the Centre is yet to approve a law passed by the Delhi assembly in this regard, exposing the MLAs to provisions for disqualification under the office of profit law. The EC’s notice sent last month followed a petition filed in June 2015 by advocate Prashant Pandey, who sought disqualification of the MLA s claiming t hat t hey held offices of profit. “The commission has considered your request for extension of time and has granted time up to May 10, to file your reply in the matter. It maybenotedthatif noreply is received by the aforesaid date, itwillbepresumedthat you have nothing to say in the matter and the commission will take appropriate actionwithoutfurtherreference,” the EC letter said.

Earlier Delhi govt said the appointments were done “for smooth functioning of the govt”
