IPL Racks Up Big Score on Facebook
Ongoing tournament generates 111 million interactions on the social media platform
New Delhi: India’s biggest cricket stars and influencers are not just stepping up action on the IPL pitches but on social media as well.
Facebook said the ongoing IPL generated about 111 million interactions on the platform till April 20, with 14.2 million users logging in to discuss the game. From Virat Kohli posting a thank you picture and note for his Royal Challengers Bangalore trainer to Ravindra Jadeja unveiling his first picture with his bride and AB De Villiers posting behind the scenes snippets of his shoot with Kohli and Gayle on Instagram, cricketers and users are sharing key moments and behind the scenes action.
“More cricket fans engage with content on Facebook than anywhere else,” said Asha Thacker, strategic partner-development at Facebook.
“For the first time this season, IPL fans can support their favourite teams by adding exclusive frames. People will also have an opportunity to express their support through exciting features like dedicated prompts featuring an all new custom icon to let their friends know they are watching the game.”
“With Facebook Live, fans are able to get closer to the action than ever before and on match days, fans can watch videos and see images directly from the stadium and relive key moments from the IPL Facebook page and Instagram accounts,” she added.
Virat Kohli is the most discussed player on Facebook and Mumbai Indians is the most discussed team. Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Chris Gayle have 27.1 million, 11.6 million, 9.5 million, 6.7 million and 6.2 million followers, respectively, on Facebook. Kohli rules the popularity charts on Instagram as well with 3 million followers, followed by AB de Villiers and Yuvraj Singh at 1 million each.
