It’s the Girl Child, Not Population

Apropos the Edit ‘Not Population But Social Development’ (Apr 25), while India is not a greying country and its fertility rate is above the replacement rate, what is of great concern is the deteriorating child sex ratio (CSR). The 2011 census revealed a CSR of 918, which is the lowest since Independence. And, what is even more alarming is that CSR in rural areas at 923 was better than the urban areas, at a measly 905. The difference in the urban-rural ratio proves that economic progress does not necessarily lead to society’s social and cultural progress.
