ICMR, Sun Pharma to Jointly Work on New Drug De­vel­op­ment

The In­dian Coun­cil of Med­i­cal Re­search (ICMR) will col­lab­o­rate with pharma com­pany Sun Pharma on the de­vel­op­ment of drugs and other treat­ment strate­gies that af­fect the country at the same pro­por­tion as malaria, said di­rec­tor gen­eral Soumya Swami­nathan, re­ports Prabha Ragha­van.

“We have to come out with more drugs that are made in In­dia. Many of them could be tra­di­tional,” said Swami­nathan, who also an­nounced a PPP with Sun Pharma on April 25 to erad­i­cate malaria in Mad­hya Pradesh’s Mandla district. While ICMR and Sun Pharma did not elab­o­rate on the other dis­ease ar­eas that would be tar­geted through their tie-up, ICMR would con­trib­ute to R&D of in­no­va­tor drugs in the country, said Swami­nathan.
