In­dia Asks UK to De­port Mallya UB chief, who had left In­dia in early March, can ap­proach Bri­tish au­thor­i­ties for per­mis­sion to con­tinue his stay

New Delhi: In­dia has asked the UK to de­port Vi­jay Mallya, who has been chased by banks over un­paid loans and in­ter­est run­ning into to thou­sands of crores, cit­ing re­vo­ca­tion of his pass­port and a non-bail­able war­rant against him.

The for­eign min­istry has writ­ten to the High Com­mis­sion of the UK in Delhi re­quest­ing the de­por­ta­tion of Mal- lya, so that his pres­ence can be se­cured for in­ves­ti­ga­tions over money laun­der­ing, min­istry spokesper­son Vikas Swarup told a press meet on Thurs­day, four days af­ter In­dia re­voked the busi­ness­man’s pass­port. The In­dian High Com­mis­sion in the UK will also be is­su­ing a sim­i­lar note ver­baly to the UK For­eign and Com­mon­wealth Of­fice, Swarup said. The pass­port was re­voked af­ter a Mum­bai court is­sued the ar­rest war­rant aga- inst Mallya in con­nec­tion with a probe into al­leged fraud in the .₹ 900 crore IDBI Bank loan case. The En­force­ment Di­rec­torate is prob­ing whether he si­phoned off money that his now-grounded King­fisher Air­lines had bor­rowed. Mallya and the com­pany deny any wrong­do­ing.

Mallya, who had left In­dia in early March, can ap­proach the Bri­tish au­thor­i­ties to grant him per­mis­sion to con­tinue his stay in that coun­try or chal­lenge the re­vo­ca­tion of his pass­port.
